Freight logistics costs remain extraordinarily high in developing countries estimated at more than 45% in East Africa. While much effort is being directed towards reducing this cost, safety and security challenges in the international supply chain pose a big hurdle. The business sector is not better off in the wake of these challenges as they contribute to increased costs of doing business and thus affect competitiveness.
In an attempt to keep pace with these challenges, FEAFFA in collaboration with The International Air Cargo Association (TIACA) has developed a short term training program in logistics efficiency, safety and security. As a strategy to rich out the entire region, 25 trainers from all the EAC countries have been trained to facilitate trainings to all freight logistics stakeholders in their respective countries that may require this knowledge.
The training programme addresses issues of transportation management, information systems and technology in supply chain management, axle load control, selected value chains, border control, FEAFFA Code of Conduct, safety and security in the supply chain. These are critical aspects in the logistics sector.
It is our sincere belief that East Arica will become a more competitive region with most of the stakeholders equipped with the relevant knowledge in cargo logistics efficiency, safety and security.
In a related development, FEAFFA co-sponsored an international air cargo conference that took place in Nairobi in February 2011. During this event, opportunities and challenges in Air cargo business in Africa were explored. Many international players in the air cargo business shared their experiences for the benefit of the local players.
We will be looking forward to sharing many more related developments with you.
Thank you
